The DVSA is encouraging motorists to use a free tool to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy or they will face fines. With the rollout of new number plates in September, experts are warning that garages could quickly receive an influx of MOT bookings.
In response to this, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is urging drivers to be aware of when their MOT is due to expire. In an online post on X, formerly Twitter, the DVSA highlighted its free MOT reminder service. After signing up, you won’t have to worry about forgetting the MOT test date.
“Sign up to receive a text message or email four weeks before your MOT is due.”
When drivers use the reminder service, they will receive a reminder one month before their car, van, motorcycle, or lorry’s MOT is due, while large trailers, buses, or lorries will receive a reminder two months before their MOT.
The news comes as Britons are reminded that driving a vehicle without a valid MOT could result in a £1,000 fine. For text reminders, drivers are limited to just two vehicles, but this does not apply for email reminders. Motorists will need their vehicle’s number plate and a mobile phone number or email address to enroll in the DVSA reminder service. It is part of DVSA’s efforts to modernize its services and provide Britons with an increasing number of online options for checking their motoring documents.
Northern Ireland drivers cannot use the service, but the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) will inform them seven weeks before their MOT expires.
To avoid letting their MOT expire, experts advise drivers to book their MOTs as soon as possible so that they can use their local garage instead of having to travel farther. An MOT can be renewed up to a month (minus a day) before it expires. The earliest they can get another MOT to keep the same date is April 16 if the MOT runs out on May 15. MOT testing is popular in August and September, with previous warnings indicating millions might scramble to book in the final months.
Additionally, drivers can be fined if they continue to drive without a valid MOT certificate after an MOT certificate becomes void.
