As the British Government issues more and more advice about staying at home during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, what should you do if your vehicle MOT test expires during this period?
The Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has responded to a series of enquiries in relation to MOT tests that are due over the next few weeks and months and as it currently stands, there is no special provision being made to exempt vehicles for those of us who choose to self-isolate. This means that if you want to continue to use your vehicle legally on the road during this time, you will still have to find the means to get your MOT test renewed.
What Are My Options?
If you are self-isolating or feel that you are vulnerable, it might mean that you have to insure another driver on your vehicle and ask them to take it to a test centre. The alternative may be to temporarily declare your vehicle as SORN, but please bear in mind that you cannot then park your vehicle legally on the road or street.
As no provisions for MOT exemptions have been made as of yet, failing to MOT a vehicle will leave you at risk of a fine of up to £1,000 if it is not declared off the road, or is caught driving on public roads without.
If your vehicle MOT expires within the next calendar month, you also have the option of getting your MOT test carried out earlier that the expiry date.
What if MOT Centres are Ordered to Close?
The DVSA has issued no formal instruction or guidance on this currently, but say the situation is “constantly under review”.
As stated above, if your MOT is due in the next calendar month, it may be worth putting your car through the test sooner rather than later. This will help in case MOT test centres are advised or ordered to close in the near future.
